Big Night In NYC

The NATIONAL RADIO HALL OF FAME Dinner was held in NEW YORK last night. JEFF ROWE, who was at the event, shared the happenings with ALL ACCESS.

SCOTT SHANNON hosted the event. He told short stories about everyone in his set-up of the inductees.

The Inductees

  • MARK LEVIN, who spoke about being inspired by both RUSH LIMBAUGH and SEAN HANNITY.
  • FRED JACOBS introduced by PAUL JACOBS. He had the room laughing by saying his introduction as a consultant is like a punter winning the HEISMAN TROPHY.
  • MIKE & MIKE spoke about first meeting each other and how they made their families a central part of their show over the years.
  • JIM KERR was introduced by JIM HARPER. KERR told a great story without notes about his radio career starting at 14, getting fired at 15 and being in NEW YORK within 5 years. In HARPER's introduction he said KERR is the longest running morning personality in NEW YORK CITY history.
  • DR. LAURA SCHLESSINGER was introduced by GREG MOCERI. She was emotional at first, and spoke about breaking into radio by calling into a radio talk show, used a fake name but, the host loved her and kept inviting her back. She talked about moving from NEW YORK to LOS ANGELES and her rise on KFI to national syndication.
  • JONATHON BRANDMEIER was introduced by JIMMY DE CASTRO. DE CASTRO talked about taking a big risk on BRANDMEIER when he hired him from KZZP/PHOENIX and brought him to CHICAGO. Earlier, SHANNON mentioned prior to WRBQ (Q105)/TAMPA, he never did mornings. So before he created "The Morning Zoo," he listened to the top morning people around the country at the time and said, BRANDMEIER was the best person he heard and inspired him.
  • JOAN HAMBURG was introduced by ALAN ALDA, who was generous in his praise of HAMBURG. When she came up, she was funny and told great stories of being a female trailblazer in NEW YORK.
  • NANCI DONNELLAN was not there, so GABE HOBBS accepted on her behalf. He talked about "The Sports Babe" breaking through the sports talk boys club. He also talked about DONNELLAN working through cancer, a stroke and a recent illness that she's recovering from. He praised her for big success in an all male business at the time and how she made it acceptable for women in sports radio and television today.
  • MIKE FRANCESA was introduced by CBS SPORTS' JIM NANTZ. NANTZ told about his audition at CBS 30 years ago. He had to conduct a spontaneous interview but, he didn't know who he'd interview. Out from behind the curtain came FRANCESCA, who's been a huge influence on NANTZ's career. FRANCESA talked about his long career on WFAN/NEW YORK and how DON IMUS inspired him.
  • KID KELLY was introduced by COUSIN BRUCE MORROW. KELLY talked about coming from humble beginnings, being raised by his Aunt and making it to WHTZ (Z100)/NEW YORK.
