Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony Underway: Brandi Carlile, Lauren Daigle, Tori Kelly, Kacey Musgraves Are Big Winners

Grammy Premiere Ceremony Underway

The 61st GRAMMY AWARDS PREMIERE CEREMONY got underway this morning at the MICROSOFT THEATER with the big show starting in approximately four hours. Host SHAGGY got things off to a great start by delivering the rules reggae-style. "Forty-five seconds to speech/The clock starts ticking the moment you reach… keep it brief," before giving out the first award of the night to DAVE CHAPPELLE for "Equanimity & The Bird Revelation." Later, the host would accept his own GRAMMY for BEST REGGAE ALBUM for his collaboration with STING on "44/876," ending ZIGGY MARLEY's winning streak in the category.

RECORDING ACADEMY favorite BECK took home two awards for BEST ALTERNATIVE ALBUM and BEST ENGINEERED ALBUM (with EMILY LAZAR becoming the first female winner in this category, which prompted her "She's in the mix" cry).

Other multiple winners included TORI KELLY (BEST GOSPEL ALBUM and BEST GOSPEL PERFORMANCE/SONG with KIRK FRANKLIN), LAUREN DAIGLE (BEST CONTEMPORARY CHRISTIAN MUSIC PERFORMANCE/SONG and BEST CONTEMPORARY CHRISTIAN MUSIC ALBUM) and the "Voices Of MISSISSIPPI Artists And Musicians Documented by WILLIAM FERRIS" (BEST HISTORICAL ALBUM and BEST ALBUM NOTES). QUINCY JONES earned his record-setting 29th GRAMMY for his NETFLIX documentary in the BEST MUSIC FILM category.

If you're looking for clues as to what will happen tonight, BRANDI CARLILE picked up her first-ever GRAMMYS for BEST AMERICANA ROOTS PERFORMANCE, BEST AMERICANA ROOTS SONG and BEST AMERICANA ALBUM; "Black Panther" was named BEST SCORE SOUNDTRACK FOR VISUAL MEDIA and LADY GAGA picked up hers for "Joanne" (BEST POP SOLO PERFORMANCE) and "Shallow" in the BEST SONG WRITTEN FOR VISUAL MEDIA. In addition, CHILDISH GAMBINO's "This Is AMERICA" earned a BEST MUSIC VIDEO nod, while KACEY MUSGRAVES picked up a BEST COUNTRY SOLO PERFORMANCE for "Butterfly." and a BEST COUNTRY SONG for "Space Cowboy." Other Country winners included DAN + SHAY for BEST COUNTRY DUO/GROUP PERFORMANCE for "Tequila." Five-time nominee H.E.R. earned BEST R&B PERFORMANCE for "The Best Part" with DANIEL CAESAR. 

Notable no-show ARIANA GRANDE had the last laugh, winning BEST POP VOCAL ALBUM for "Sweetner.," her first-ever GRAMMY.  The category was originally supposed to be given out during the GRAMMY AWARDS themselves, but switched at the last moment when GRANDE pulled out of the show.

Live performances included WORLD MUSIC nominee MALIAN singer-songwriter FATOUMATA DIAWARA and NIGERIAN Afrobeat artist SEUN KUTI,, NEW AGE nominee SNATAM KAUR, REGIONAL MEXICAN ALBUM nominee.ANGELA AGUILAR with fellow nominees NATALIA LAFORCADE and AIDA CUEVES in a historic reunion, classical trumpet player CRAIG MORRIS and EDM duo SOFI TUKKER, marking the first-ever GRAMMY performance for an electronic music group. Presenters included SHAGGY, THE ROOTS' QUESTLOVE, GRAMMY-winning HAWAIIAN musician KALANI PE'A, HALESTORM's LIZZY HALE, CECILE McLOREN SALVANT, TOKIMONSTA and JIMMY JAM.
