SONGS & DAUGHTERS Pres. NICOLLE GALYON and writer/producer ROSS COPPERMAN shared top honors as Songwriter Of The Year at the BMI COUNTRY AWARDS, held LAST NIGHT (NET NEWS 11/12) at the company’s NASHVILLE headquarters. DAN + SHAY’s “Tequila” was named Country Song Of The Year, and WARNER-TAMERLANE PUBLISHING GROUP was named Publisher Of The Year.

It was the first win in the songwriter category for GALLYON and the third for COPPERMAN. Each was responsible for penning four of the year’s biggest hits (for GALLYON: LEE BRICE’s “Boy,” KEITH URBAN’s “Coming Home,” LADY ANTEBELLUM’s “Heartbreak” and DAN + SHAY’s “Tequila”; for COPPERMAN: KENNY CHESNEY’s “Get Along,” BLAKE SHELTON’s “I Lived It,” JUSTIN MOORE’s “Kinda Don’t Care” and DIERKS BENTLEY’s “Woman, Amen”). GALLYON is the first female writer to win the award since TAYLOR SWIFT in 2010.

Crossover track “Tequila” was the most performed song of the year. That earned it Song Of The Year honors shared by publisher WARNER-TAMERLANE and writer GALLYON, who penned the song with ASCAP-affiliated writers DAN SMYERS and JORDAN REYNOLDS. WARNER-TAMERLANE earned its top publisher prize for having published 24 of the 50 most-performed songs of the year, including such hits as LUKE COMBS’ “Beautiful Crazy,” URBAN’s “Coming Home” featuring JULIA MICHAELS, JASON ALDEAN’s “Drowns The Whiskey” featuring MIRANDA LAMBERT, and MORGAN WALLEN’s “Up Down” featuring FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE.

As previously reported (NET NEWS 10/10) DWIGHT YOAKAM was honored with BMI’s President’s Award, and the song “Rocky Top,” written by BMI writers FELICE and BOUDLEAUX BRYANT, was honored with the inaugural Evergreen Award. Paying tribute to YOAKAM during the evening were JON PARDI (“Guitars, Cadillacs,”), THE HIGHWOMEN with JASON ISBELL (“A Thousand Miles from Nowhere”) and the pairing of MARGO PRICE and BOB WEIR (“Fast as You”). RICKY SKAGGS AND KENTUCKY THUNDER performed a rousing bluegrass version “ROCKY TOP.”

BMI Pres./CEO MIKE O’NEILL hosted the ceremony along with JODY WILLIAMS, BMI’s VP/Creative, NASHVILLE. During the event, BMI also saluted the songwriters and publishers of the 50 most-performed Country songs of the previous year. A complete list of 2019 BMI Country Awards winners can be found here.
